Wouter Van Veldhoven - Verzamelen II
The seemingly benign material, magnetic tape and the reels it spends its life on, was never intended to be manipulated to the lengths it has been since it was invented. Entire movements and genres have been based on the plasticity of the material and medium. Wouter Van Veldhoven is one of those artists who was seduced by its power and potential, and has produced music and created sculptures utilizing both modular synthesizers and tape.
This is the second volume in a retrospective of Dutch based artist Wouter Van Veldhoven's experimental modular and tape recorder pieces. Toy pianos plink amongst wheezing loops, chugging along like a wooden wagon wheel on uneven ground. One can hear what could be field recordings taken on walks across paved pathways (or perhaps just the sound of the cassette players gears?) warp gently underneath breathy tones. Listening to this is like being taken as a visitor to an antiqued world of miniatures.
