As the growing hankering for artefacts from “Down Under”’s musical past reaches insatiable proportions, Chris Bonato and Umut Turkeri have taken one for the team by putting together this Antipodean Anomalies compilation. While noting the communitarian energy of one of the world’s most isolated regions, this collection focuses instead on music by artists drifting and quietly pioneering between the scenes that have brought notoriety to 1970s and 80s Australia and New Zealand. Olev Muska and Ingrid Slamer’s “Karjapoisi Lugu (A Shepherd's Tale)” merges influences from the artist’s Estonian heritage with computer programmed drums; while Ngahiwi Apanui wields a “cheap drum machine” in the musical story-telling of Aotearoa (“New Zealand”)’s creation, “He Whakapapa.” Toy Division presents a dingy, cold-wave vision of “Melbourne Winter,” while Perth guitar and electronics aficionado Errol H. Tout admires a sunnier vista in the poetic, electronic folk song “Metaphoric Allusions.” Released on Melbourne’s Left Ear Records.
