V/A – Virtual Dreams (Ambient Explorations In The House & Techno Age, 1993-1997)
If only upon opening this release you found a card with a number on it that you could dial at a payphone on Houston and 2nd on a Friday night, and on the other end of the line were instructions for the location of the weekend's rave. Friday night goes by, and so does Saturday morning. As the evening descends so do you, into the chill-out zone to revivify your danced-out, love-drenched soul.
This incredibly rich triple LP release doesn't come with that card, but it does come with a 90cmx60cm poster and a holographic Virtual Dreams sticker. Commemorating a movement born within the early rave scene, this compilation put together by Jamie Tiller outlines a wave of futurist-ambient producers, largely from the house and techno scene, that helped soundtrack early "chill out rooms". Psychedelic and life-giving, with or without beats, these liquid compositions pushed the boundaries of both ambient and techno into the subsequent decades, further developing from the richness of these early explorations. Featuring early David Moufang, Richard H. Kirk, LFO, the IDM pioneer Bedouin Ascent and more.
