Jan Jelinek – Tierbeobachtungen
Another Jan Jelinek reissue for 2020, this time being pressed to wax for the very first time since it's initial release to CD. As hinted in the album art, this album from 2006 sits comfortably in the saddle between peaks in the Alps, or perhaps between the saddle between two pillows on your bed during 2020's lockdown.
The title 'Tierbeobachtungen' means animal observations, and is noted by the late lamented Martin Büsser to be one of Jelinek's freest works. These are drifting loops from a laptop and miniature synths, various effects pedals and processed with dream logic.
Like dried high mountain grasses, swirling in a breeze, so does 'A Concert of Television.' What sounds like strumming creates an intriguing percussive backup that brings to mind tones from the tabla. Other pieces like the title track 'Tierbeobachtungen' are of a vast minimalism, bringing forth a shifting scene of larger-than-life mental spaces. Diving electronic hiss, periodic pings of bells and machine-like confirmation sounds dot the mental landscape, providing cairns along the way through the illusion.
