Gavilán Rayna Ryssom - Transverberation
Gavilán Rayna Russom needs not much of a introduction. Having carved a path for the last dozen or so years as a synthesizer witch and is now at the helm of her own label Voluminous Arts, launched in early 2020. Transverberation can be read as a nod to her own personal identity and journey to reclaim both her self and an artistic space that, for a long time, has been obscured by her "professional musician" career. This release is an often noisy, industrial, squealing caterwaul of sound that puts you at one end of a long, dark tunnel. However, one track called "In The Service of Moving Out of Avoidance," brings the moment of most melody found on the album. Reading a recent interview with Russom which talks about the abandoned buildings, DIY skate parks, and other industrial debris that were found in her childhood and teenage explorations, one can feel a connection to reclaiming the curiosity and freedom.
“I think there [was] a while where I, just without realizing it, had internalized this ridiculous thing about doing something better than just the thing that I do, and I think the founding of Voluminous Arts, The Envoy, Secret Passage, really represent me like, really claiming my space, really reclaiming my space.”
