Frog of Earth - Frog of Earth
Make no mistake, this is a concept album about frogs by Mel Keane, a musician and illustrator from Dublin who has previously released as Melly and DJ Aprés Ski. This venture is rhythmic but far less drums than the other aliases. Frog of Earth begins with "Lying Down", where the skittering insect squeaks, resonant peeps and synthetic calls from across the swamp make way for your horizontal position.
The freely flowering arrangements recall what an experience day-to-day as a frog may entail. Abrupt announcements from other creatures cause a response, innate desires pull you in another direction, and all along there is an unsure tension beneath the surface of calm. On one of the more rhythmic tracks, "OY SEH UM," we hear one of the only utterances of a human voice across the albums nine tracks. We are steeped in an amphibious world, where common form is lost and found amidst the ensemble of characters-as-sound we are introduced to along the way.
