Salenta + Topu - Moon Set, Moon Rise
A casual, chance conversation at a mutual friend's gathering in the summer of 2019 has blossomed into the album Moon Set, Moon Rise. Composed, improvised, performed and recorded by Salenta and Topu in Salenta's apartment, this collection of pieces arose out of a mutual need to create in a comfortable space. This means not only outside of a recording studio, in the familiarity of a home, but also comfortable with working with what you have. Salenta adopted an old spinet piano that had not seen a tuner in a couple of decades. Instead of stressing about the not-so-"perfect" quality of the instrument, it laid the foundation for the two. Topu tuned his cello down to match the intonation of the piano.
Varying in length from 1:12 to 7:12, the pieces are both songs and sketches. The entire album runs almost an hour. Salenta's penchant for colorful, dense, jazz chords and tonal quality of the recording bring to mind a time decades ago without feeling contrived at all. It's un-finished quality is a treat to listen through, as we hear the ideas develop in real time between the players.
Quietly released earlier in February of 2021, we are pleased to have this luminous tape on hand to share to a wider audience. Recommended if you like music, jazz, happenstance and exploration.
