James Brandon Lewis, Red Lily Quintet - Jesup Wagon
Composer and tenor saxophonist James Brandon Lewis brings his music to a supreme inter-generational group, the Red Lily Quintet, for a trip that begins with fairly traditional jazz forms, and then blossoms, caterwauling and tumbling with grace, for an odyssey with some of the best living jazz performers today.
While some of the forms may be familiar, James' melodic and rhythmic ear are tuned with a modern ear. On "Fallen Flowers" we get to hear Chad Taylor construct long lines that sound alive - like a mind of their own is accenting the other players while occasionally stealing the show. "Lowlands of Sorrow" gives us James' saxophone in full force. As a tribute to the late pioneering intellectual George Washington Carver, this album does not disappoint.
